The bald cypress tree has soft needles that add great texture to a landscape. A bald cypress handles flooding better than all other tree species. They prefer growing near moving water or even in swampy areas. That’s why it’s Louisiana’s state tree.
The bald cypress is actually related to the California redwood. This tree can live for centuries. Commonly they grow to about 40 or 50 feet, some can get quite a bit larger. Even though they are big trees you can use them in a medium sized yard because it grows vertically. It provides great shade but it doesn’t get as wide as some other shade trees and generally have a width of about 25 feet on a full grown tree.
This conifer loses its leaves in winter. That’s why they call it a “bald” cypress. Many people choose not to go with them as a single specimen tree for this reason. The bald cypress is easy care once it is established. They produce small cones but they are fairly easy to clean up.
