The coconut palm is the the perfect tropical palm tree. A Coconut palm is used for many purposes in many countries such as coconut oil, used world-wide in cosmetics, soaps, cooking oils and margarine. They are happiest in warmer and coastal areas of South Florida.
Coconut Palm Specs
A coconut is a moderate grower that can grow to 50 feet or more. It will not produce nuts until it’s about 6 to 8 years old. The nuts themselves take about a year to ripen. They are very salt-tolerant and make perfect beachside plantings. They can be sensitive to cold.
Coconut Palm Care
The coconut palm doesn’t like wet feet. Fertilize three times a year. Trim off browned fronds while the palm is young and you can reach them.
Coconut Palm Spacing
If you are planting them next to the house give them at least 10 feet. When planting in a row, space them 8 feet or more apart. They do not do very good in containers.
