Firecracker plant has red flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The flowers, usually found in red, make for a showy plant.
The firecracker plant needs plenty of room to grow. You will want to plan ahead so its size works in the area you want to plant. They are not a good choice for neat freaks that want a formal look. An individual plant can spread up to 5 feet wide and may overwhelm nearby smaller plants. Avoid placing anything directly in front of a firecracker plant.
Firecracker Plant Specs
Firecrackers are somewhat moderate to fast growers to 3 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. They do best in full to part sun but will grow in part shade. They are considered to be salt-tolerant shrubs. The firecracker plant will flower off and on all year.
Firecracker Plant Care
You will want to add top soil when you plant. It is not a bad idea to also add composted cow manure to the mix. If you like you can trim long branches, but don’t hard prune the entire plant. Fertilize 3 times a year with a controlled-release fertilizer. A firecracker plant needs regular waterings to do its best.
Firecracker Plant Spacing
Give them about 3 to 4 feet of spacing when planting. If you are planting them next to the house space them about 3 feet or more apart. If planting next to walkways or drives give them about 3 to 4 feet. They will be perfect in containers and will flow over the edge nicely.
