It is believed the geiger tree is native to the Florida Keys. The geiger tree has beautiful groups of bright orange, yellow and white flowers that bloom in the warmer months. The most common are the orange geiger. It has been called one of the most beautiful of all Florida native trees. No one really knows if the geiger tree is a Florida native or if it was introduced from Cuba. There’s even a small island named after it.
These showy trees will work in just about any South Florida landscape. They have been known to attract hummingbirds. The geiger tree is fairly low maintenance, especially if they are planted in a somewhat protected area. They have a high salt tolerance so they are perfect for any coastal property here in South Florida..
Geiger Tree Specs
A geiger tree will grow to about 15 to 20 feet. It prefers a full to partial sun location, though it will grow in part shade. It is best to buy a single trunk tree for strength even though they can be purchased as multi trunks. They do not do well in the cold especially if there is any chance of frost. The frost may even kill a geiger tree. They love to be in a nice warm sunny spot. The geiger tree is considered to be drought and salt tolerant, so it makes for a great tree on any South Florida coastal property.
Geiger Tree Care
There is no need to amend the soil when planting. Water regularly after planting, and during dry spells once it’s established. You can gut it back to control size in the spring. Fertilize three times a year with a granular fertilizer. To promote a heavier bloom you can supplement feedings with bone meal.
Geiger Tree Spacing
You’ll want to give the crown room to fill out nicely, so plant them at least 10′ from the house. You can plant them in a row, just remember to plant them 6 to 8 feet apart. They will work in containers or planters while young.
