Night Blooming Jasmine
The sweet smelling night blooming jasmine is a favorite shrub for landscapes here in South Florida. The cream colored flowers are small and not particularly showy but the scent is wonderful. The fragrance is strongest at night. You can enjoy their fragrance from just one plant in your landscape. They enjoy a sunny spot. The night blooming jasmine will bloom off and on all year. They are toxic so make sure to place them out of reach from children and pets.
Night Blooming Jasmine Specs
This is a plant that prefers full to part sun and grows quickly. It will grow in partial shade, but flowers less. They do best in Zone 10. It may drop it’s leaves during a harsh winter. They will grow in containers, allowing you to bring them in during those cold spells. You can keep this jasmine shrub trimmed to 3 or 4 feet tall. You can also let it get bigger if you want.
Night Blooming Jasmine Care
You will want to add top soil to the hole when you plant for best results. After they bloom trim them for shape. You can also trim them hard in fall or spring to control the plant’s size. They prefer regular watering just let the plant dry out between waterings. Fertilize 3 times a year with a granular fertilizer. You can feed it with bone meal and/or liquid fertilizer to get more flowers.
Night Blooming Jasmine Spacing
Planting them 3 feet apart should be good. If you are planting them next to the house 2-1/2 to 3 feet of space is good. You may want to give them a little more room to spread out if you are using them around patios, walks or drives, maybe 4′ or so. They can be grown in containers but they will outgrow them.
